"Magical Hat"
Written by: Leah Goldberg   |   Illustrations: Maya Manor
Every day, every day,
I dream of a magical hat.

A small hat, with a feather,
that does everything I tell it to.
I'd put it on and say, for example,
"Hat - make me grow!"

And then I suddenly shall rise,
and my body will stretch and I will be big.

And there's no one like me in the whole world -
because I'm taller and bigger than everyone else.
And everyone looks at me with fear and respect,
because I'm so very tall.
And mom will never say:
"go to sleep, it's getting late!"

And dad will scold no more:
"don't interfere when the grown ups are talking!"
And when I talk everyone will listen,
because I'm the biggest in the whole world.
Every day, every day,
I dream of a magical hat.

A small hat, with a feather,
that does everything I tell it to.
Here I have a second wish:
Hat, turn in to a boat!

Immediatley it jumps from my head to the sea,
and I sail it all over the world.
To distant islands, to a foreign land,
 I go back and forth,

and I see cities and so many people -
Persians, Indians, and Africans.
And no one will understand, no one shall know,
that alone in the sea sails a girl.
And if I get sad in the sea,
I'll tell it: "Hat, take me home!"

And I'll come back home and bring my friends
presents from all the countries I visited.
And friends will sit around me,
and I will tell them stories.
And no one will dare to say: "She's making this up again!"
Every day, every day, I dream of a magical hat.
But where can I find this type of hat?
I won't ask mom and dad, because grown ups won't understand this at all!
